ART 3170-01

Phase 1: The Site

Phase 2: Field Work

The first art piece is called “You Are the Star” by Thomas Suriya. It is a 20’ x 30’ mural painted in 1984 on the side of the Attie Building on Wilcox Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. The mural depicts the inside of a theatre with its red seats and a large audience. The audience is looking out at you, but the audience is comprised of very important pop culture icons. Some of the people featured are Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Charlie Chaplin, Superman, Cleopatra and many more.

The second art piece is called “That Child of Fleeting Time”. It is a sculpture that was made by the artist Kyungmi Shin. The sculpture is placed outside of Sunset Bronson Studios/ICON Building Netflix Offices. The shape of the sculpture has a lot to do with the location, since it’s on a film studio, it has four film strips that feature LED visuals playing on them. It is made of stainless steel and measures approximately 30’ x 6’ x 15’. The visuals playing on the film strips are assorted clips of important technological advancements that have been made in film history. The people that are being represented are people that have made a significant impact on the world of film and have helped make cinema what it is today.

The third piece is titled “Hollywood Jazz 1945-1972” by Richard Wyatt Jr. This piece is a 26’ x 88’mural. The mural is located at the Capitol Records building at 1750 Vine St.  It was made in 1991 and originally was an acrylic paint mural but after it was damaged it was turned into a ceramic tile mural in 2012. The mural was commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Society and paid for by the Los Angeles Endowment for the Arts. The mural features jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker and many more.

Phase 3: Critical Analysis

The people that are being represented in these artworks are artists and creatives. This completely fits in the community of Hollywood. It is known for being the epicenter of the entertainment industry and where people go to chase their dreams. Two of the artworks focus on filmmakers and actors which are an integral part of Hollywood. The other artwork focuses on musicians which are also an important part of the entertainment industry. Both music and film are the foundation of Hollywood and are the reason why millions of people visit the Walk of Fame every year.

Phase 4: Proposal

What I liked about my community is that the artworks really represent what Hollywood is. Hollywood is about the fame and entertainment; I think these artworks truly represent that. Something that I didn’t like is that most of the artworks seem relatively old. I feel like I couldn’t find more recent artworks in my community. I think something that I would like to see more of within the artworks is culture. I feel like certain people and cultures are not represented in these works. For this reason, I really liked the jazz mural because the importance of black culture and artist on jazz is undeniable.  I would like to see maybe murals or sculptures of important figures that have maybe been overlooked or forgotten within the film/music industry.
