El Sereno Public Art - Briyith Ramirez
Civil Engagement
Phase 1: The Site
The site that I decided to chose is my neighborhood, El Sereno. My neighborhood may not have a lot of art. During this time of year is when my neighborhood celebrates the Day of Dead and many schools in the neighborhood create art pieces that is displayed for the neighborhood to see. I chose the art that was closest to my home as well as the ones I see every day, heading to school and work. There were many Day of the Dead murals displayed that school made but the two I chose were personal to me because I went to both schools. I chose "El Sereno's Happiness" because of their message they are trying to send. They are trying to encourage children to find enjoyment in science. I chose the Pueblo sign because there is some gang violence in my neighborhood and in that sign they made a whole in the P using a bullet. I chose the "Latina and Proud" graffiti because I like the style and my personal connection to it due to me being Latina.
Phase 2: Field Work
Phase 3: Critical Analysis
The patterns that I have found is that many are showing viewers the culture people have that live in this neighborhood. The murals are trying to show viewers the history of people that live in the neighborhood due to gentrification taking over some neighborhoods. The "El Sereno's Happiness" mural is there to encourage children to find enjoyment in science. The Day of the Dead murals are there to connect the community during this sensitive holiday where people miss their loved ones that passed away the most. The school Day of the Dead murals, LAUSD funds them by having a budget aside for arts. The "El Sereno's Happiness" mural was a community funded mural. The people that funded it were City Councilman Jose Huizar, local business, and community members. The "Latina and Proud" mural is unknown on who funded it.
Phase 4: Proposal
My neighborhood does not have many mural and that is something that I would propose to my community and to the city. I think that we should have more murals like other neighborhoods in Los Angeles that represent hispanics and latino's heritage. There is only one mural in my neighborhood that has that representation and I think there should be more. I like the messages that the art is sending out to the neighborhood. I think that it is important to learn and understand the history of the people that were here before us, even though it is only one small mural. I would make the utility box mural bigger. I think the wall behind it would be amazing for a mural that shows the history of Mesoamerica. Especially in the time that we are living in right now that our government wanting to erase ethnic studies and wanting to remove undocumented people. I also like to see that the Day of the Dead murals that the school in LAUSD make are still a tradition. Growing up in El Sereno, during this time of year schools put out these murals. Every year is a different mural that shows the new generation of children and their work. One thing I dislike is the lack of art in my neighborhood, there is not a lot of art because people ruin it with graffiti and people end up painting over it. I think that is something that should be discussed in the community too respect others work.
