Public Art in Glassell Park

By Lourenzo Martinez

The Site:

I chose to do my investigation of public art in Glassell Park, I choose this neighborhood specifically due to my familiarity with this place. I have lived in Glassell Park for my entire life so I am familiar with the location. However, I am not familiar with the art within the community, so I thought it would be nice to learn more about the place that I live.

Field Work:

1.
this photo is an old photo, due to this wall art not being around anymore. This art piece was painted over 1 or 2 months back, the reason for it being painted over was because gang graffiti. so now a plain blank wall replaces it.

2.
this art piece was put up not to long ago, it was commissioned for the 100th anniversary of the school. this painting is representative of the schooling system itself, going from building paper air planes to then reading books and wanting to be an astronaut.

Artist: Paul Botello
Theme: growth within a school
Who is represented: students
Materials: paint
Sponsors: the school
Inscription: the school name and 100 year anniversary
community reaction: positive

3.
this art piece is reminiscent of the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, but this one is on a smaller scale and reads out "Glassellland". the artist wanted to put this up to show pride in the place they live and encouraged fellow residence to take pride in Glassell Park. the original sign was put up in 2013 and then taken down, but the new sign was put up in late 2020 and remains up.

Location: Glassell Park Recreation Center, 3650 Verdugo Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90065
Artist: Justin
Theme: pride in ones living space
Who is represented: the people of Glassell Park
Materials: plywood
Sponsors: N/A
Inscription: Glassellland
community reaction: Positive
4.
this is a wall mural by Triston Eaton based off one of his series Women of Marvel. it features three women dressed as various marvel characters.

Location: 3420 Eagle Rock Blvd Unit #1, Los Angeles, CA 90065
Artist: Triston Eaton
Theme: women empowerment
Who is represented: women
Materials: paint
Sponsors: Revenge of comic book store
Inscription: the artist name and Marvel logo
community reaction: positive

Critical Analysis:

The first two art pieces that I highlighted a representative of the ethnicity that dominates the community, which would be people of latin decent. the first art piece depicts a soccer game and the second shows the progression of a student. the third is a sign reminiscent of the Hollywood sign, this represents the people that live in Glassell Park and how we should take pride in living here. The fourth piece represents women and the power that they have. every piece but the the third one was funded privately due to it being store/school commissioned art murals, so they paid an artist to paint these pieces on there building. the sign was funded by the local council which I believe would be consider public funding due to them getting money from the city a public body. the school mural was voted on by the people, they were presented with multiple designs to choose from.

Proposal:

In my community I have seen a lot of shop driven art murals, these stores would commission artist to create a mural for the store for one to make the store itself prettier and two it can draw people in the store if the mural is interesting enough. I don't dislike anything in my community other than the gang graffiti that some times get put over these murals but that is a problem for a different time. my community is a very keep to themselves community we really don't care what is going on around us so art murals and art itself is not a big concern, like me and many people I know when a new piece of art comes up we say "that's cool" and then we go about our day, but I do notice some of the art I have presented that the art on the side of businesses is probably the best idea for places for art to be done. these businesses should have murals that represent what they're about but also to cater to the community to not seem distant and more welcoming.
