Phase 3: Critical Analysis

The people being represented in the public realm of these art pieces and within the community are mainly the hispanic community and historical figures that were impactful to the area. These pictures were captured during the peak of the ICE raids going on here in Los Angeles and the art reflects the community's feelings towards the events going on. Some of the art displays regarding the immigration raids were either a display of the negative feelings towards ICE or resilient pieces of art to show support for the community and spread encouragement of overcoming these terrible times. The histories within the artworks provided are centered around the founders of the pueblo of Los Angeles located on the famous Olvera St. Others such as the murals on the city hall and within Olvera St either show cultural values such as animals and their importance to family or The Family Man murals on the city hall walls that are representative of many cultures such as Indigenous, Mexican, African, and Islamic families and their diverse identities.

Phase 4: Proposal

I really enjoy that the community creates so much street art and public artworks as well, I think it makes the city look more inviting, colorful, and spirited with all the voices being projected in art form. I love how the art all over Downtown Los Angeles are spread everywhere and in all different forms, the art ranges from street art, sculptures, murals, architectures, and even paintings being placed within museums. I like the variation in art mediums, styles, and the messages behind the art pieces because they can be understood and enjoyed by the community. An addition of art I would like to see more of are sculptures and statues, there were only a couple placed in very popular areas but I think even smaller ones could be placed in less popular dense areas around the city. I would propose that there is a statue of fieldworkers placed in an area such as by the courts in downtown that people will come across often because the courts are being visited daily by those serving for jury duty or for any other legal reasons.

The city I chose was Downtown Los Angeles, originally I wanted to choose the city I live in which is Montebello but after dedicating a day to explore my city I found very little public art. Unfortunately the only artworks I found in Montebello were a couple utility boxes on the street being painted over. I would propose that the city of Montebello works on placing more artwork in the public since there is a lack of it, I think it would bring the community closer and would document historical and valuable moments of time in art form. I think murals would be a great addition to the city and perhaps some sculptures and statues of important figures. So instead I thought I could take the metro train to downtown and be intentional about looking for art. In Downtown Los Angeles I found an abundance of art ranging from graffiti on the floors to unique architectural structures.
