The Site

    Not only is Pico Rivera a big part of me, but it has history of many years. I've lived in Pico Rivera for the past 30 years since I was born. The history behind Pico Rivera is very well known not only do we have the Pico Rivera sports arena where many artists have sang like Vicente Fernandez, Ezequiel Pena, and Antonio Aguilar, but have other activities like  jaripeo's there where there is bull riding and coleaderos. Before Pico Rivera was Pico Rivera there was once a battle to conquest Alta California meaning before it was California it was a part of Mexico. The Governor of Alta California named Pio Pico lived on the outskirts of what Pico Rivera is now.

The Camino Real Bells 
The Camino Real Bells that marked the route of the mission trail. These are located In the Pico Rivera plaza  in the corner of Whittier and Paramount. These bells were part of the trail and were marked as part of the highway back in 1892

Battle Of Rio San Gabriel Cannons
I know this is not Pico Rivera but its in the border of Pico Rivera and Montebello ,but this monument is a big part of Pico Rivera. This was a part of the city of Pico Rivera because it shows how they battled during the Mexican American war of the 1847.

Pico Rivera Sports Arena Electrical Box
The art in the electrical boxes were put there to represent the city of Pico Rivera. Each box has a different theme and they represent the historical part of Pico Rivera, Veteren observation, and Multi-cultural art. The artist that did these designs were young artists of the ERUSD local schools. Their art was printed and placed on the electrical boxes.

The Mural Of Rivera Middle School P.E Building 
This mural was painted by one of the history teachers at Rivera Middle school. They represent the students of the middle school and show a lot of Pico Rivera. where there was a time Rivera middle school was dominating the track, where they will go do runs in Hawaii to compete in the fastest runners. 

Critical Analysis 
In the art that I put the people of the past and present are being represented. The past is being represented since the year 1875. The histories that are being represented is the ones that founded Pico Rivera and what built for example the sports arena being a part of Pico Rivera for many years, the Camino real bells that would guy you to the missions and what used to be the old highway. The people that founded these arts are for example the ones that maintain the Camino real and the Rio Hondo cannons is caltrans, and the painting of the electrical boxes is the city, and the one in the P.E rooms is maintained by the school but they haven't retstored it. These arts like the Camino real and the Rio Hondo cannon and the electrical art work  are decided by the city where they were placed. The P.E art work was decided by the principal. 

Proposal 
the ones that I loved the most is the Rio Hondo cannon and the Camino real trait, because I love learning about history and just to think that mexico and America fought in my backyard (because I live like 2 minutes from the Rio Hondo battle it amazes me ) this is history from years ago in such short distance. the camino real bells is also 2 minutes away from me so to also think the missionaries passed through here has me thinking how was the past before Pico Rivera. I did not dislike anything but I feel like my city doesn't have so much art like in boyle heights has a mural in every corner. My city may not have art but it has so much history and how the American took over Mexico back in the late 1800's. If you ever want to come and learn about the history of Pico Rivera come and see it there's also the mansion of Pio Pico located right off the 605 fwy and Whittier, where you can get a glimpse of how the last governor of Mexico lived like.  My city should let muralist put their art work in corner stores but that represent our city, or parts of Mexico.

Arts District Public Art Erica C

Outline 11/12 ( formulating final thoughts) Art in my neighborhood  I live on 629 Traction Ave. I would consider my neighborhood 50% Arts District and 50% Little Tokyo. That’s really interesting to me because part of the everyday architecture that I see is heavily influenced by Japanese architecture, however the other half is this industrial, gentrified, grungy architecture that reflects the early history of the Arts District. Although these spaces are so close in proximity and can sometimes cross barriers, they have completely independent histories. Little Tokyo has been home to a large Japanese community since the 1800’s. The Japanese population has faced heavy subjugation and racism and they remained strong. There is a resilience to this town. In my opinion an important artwork that reflects the hopeful and happy integration of the Japanese- American community is titled “LA Rising”. Across the street from me is Angel City Brewery. Public Art in Silver Lake I chose the neighborhood of Silver Lake, Los Angeles , as the site for my civic engagement project. Silver Lake is known for its  trendy and creative "hipster" culture  — a place where fashion-conscious individuals, artists, and innovators live side by side. As a visitor that works in this neighborhood, I have always been drawn to the way the neighborhood uses murals, graffiti, and street art to express identity, history, and social commentary.
