North Hollywood, California is a vibrant neighborhood located in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles. Known for its mix of residential communities, arts districts, and historic landmarks, North Hollywood sits just north of the Hollywood Hills and is part of the larger City of Los Angeles with an area ZIP code between 91601-91605. The neighborhood is bordered by Studio City, Valley Village, Sun Valley, and Burbank, making it a central hub for culture, entertainment, and community life in the Valley.

One of the most significant cultural landmarks near North Hollywood is The Great Wall of Los Angeles, created by artist Judy Baca. Although the mural itself is located in the Tujunga Wash Flood Control Channel in the Valley Glen/Studio City area, not far from North Hollywood. It represents one of the most important public artworks in the entire region. The Great Wall is widely recognized as one of the largest monuments to interracial harmony in the United States.


This half mile-long mural along the Tujunga Flood Control Channel is a pictorial history of the ethnic people of California from prehistoric times to the mid-20th century. Conceived by artist Judy Baca, it was completed in the 1970s with more than 400 youth and their families participating in its creation.

The Great Wall of Los Angeles is one of Los Angeles’ true cultural landmarks and one of the country’s most respected and largest monuments to inter-racial harmony. SPARC’s first public art project and its true signature piece, the Great Wall is a landmark pictorial representation of the history of ethnic peoples of California from prehistoric times to the 1950’s, conceived by SPARC’S (Social Park Art Resource Center) artistic director and founder Judith F. Baca. Begun in 1974 and completed over five summers, the Great Wall employed over 400 youth and their families from diverse social and economic backgrounds working with artists, oral historians, ethnologists, scholars, and hundreds of community members.

Arts District Public Art Erica C

Outline 11/12 ( formulating final thoughts) Art in my neighborhood  I live on 629 Traction Ave. I would consider my neighborhood 50% Arts District and 50% Little Tokyo. That’s really interesting to me because part of the everyday architecture that I see is heavily influenced by Japanese architecture, however the other half is this industrial, gentrified, grungy architecture that reflects the early history of the Arts District. Although these spaces are so close in proximity and can sometimes cross barriers, they have completely independent histories. Little Tokyo has been home to a large Japanese community since the 1800’s. The Japanese population has faced heavy subjugation and racism and they remained strong. There is a resilience to this town. In my opinion an important artwork that reflects the hopeful and happy integration of the Japanese- American community is titled “LA Rising”. Across the street from me is Angel City Brewery. Public Art in Silver Lake I chose the neighborhood of Silver Lake, Los Angeles , as the site for my civic engagement project. Silver Lake is known for its  trendy and creative "hipster" culture  — a place where fashion-conscious individuals, artists, and innovators live side by side. As a visitor that works in this neighborhood, I have always been drawn to the way the neighborhood uses murals, graffiti, and street art to express identity, history, and social commentary. I photographed several works of public art in Silver Lake, including murals and street pieces located along Sunset Boulevard and nearby intersections.
